Synthetic Decking MaterialsPosted on 11:50 pm | Posted in WPC Decking Blog | Posted by
When we talk about synthetic decking materials/composite decking material, it concerns every element or component that can be used for the purpose of designing a composite deck board. Synthetic decking materials are made primarily from combining materials like plastic, wood fiber and other synthetic components. Composite decking boards take the place of standard wood decking or planks in outdoor applications like decks and docks. The installation process is similar to wood and receives high marks for its performance as a decking product.
Synthetic Decking Materials Misconceptions
Many people hold the common misconception that synthetic decking material is not wood. This is not entirely accurate – composite decking boards are actually made of a mixture of plastic and wood fibers. While the addition of plastic may cut down on maintenance, the fact that wood is present in the material means that there is still a risk for developing rot and mold. Do your homework and make sure the composite decking boards you use contains a preservative that will protect your neck from getting moisture damage.
Another widespread misconception about composite decks is that they are made from recycled material. While this may be the case for some manufacturers, it is not the standard in the industry. If this is important to you, double check with the manufacturer and be sure to ask what percentage of their product is recycled.
Maintenance Your Composite/Synthetic Decking
If there are just one or two problem boards, it’s typically not difficult or expensive to replace them. Remove the boards you wish to replace and install new ones cut to the appropriate length. If your deck has a protective finish such as stain, it’s a good idea to apply the finish to replacement boards prior to installation.
If your deck has more bad boards than good, you may want to replace all the decking and maybe go so far as to change the layout and style. Consider upgrading to synthetic decking materials, which won’t rot, warp or split over time.17 comments | Comment has been closed
